Nokia Lumia 920 appears in five color leak

Original posted by Chris Burns

Another image has appeared showing off what very well may be the hero device at this week’s Nokia/Microsoft event, this being the Lumia 920, a Windows Phone 8 smartphone for the next generation. This model has been leaked with information leading us to believe that it’ll be working with PureView technology in its 8 megapixel camera, this notion all but confirmed by Nokia’s PureView chief this morning. His comments including how “it’s NOT about the number of pixels but what you do with them” appearing as a direct response to criticism over the not-yet-confirmed Lumia smartphone.

This newest image shows the Lumia 920 in a variety of colors, the white and the black casings being ones we’d not yet seen at this point in time. The rest of the leaks suggest that this device will indeed be running Windows Phone 8 complete with its new smaller set of tiles for a more diverse range of abilities on the device’s home screen. This device will likely be popping up with a dual-core processor from Qualcomm and will have both front and back-facing cameras.
You’ll see a volume rocker on the right along with the power button and a physical camera shutter button as well. The whole model appears quite similar to the previous Nokia smartphone range with Windows Phone, particularly in the case of the Nokia Lumia 900. Nokia will be continuing their image branding here and will be pushing hard with Microsoft to keep the Windows Phone universe strong – and growing, of course.
The Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system from Microsoft will be part of the company’s big push for the next generation of Windows software on the whole, this including Windows 8 and Windows RT for tablets as well. Stay tuned for more information on Nokia’s contribution to the party as we head to the New York media event tomorrow bright and early – be here at 9:30 AM EST for all the newest blasts straight from Nokia!
BONUS: the back of the Nokia 820 has also been shown by the same source – in purple!

Nokia Asha 305, 306 and 311 Touch phones

Original posted by John McCann

Nokia has branched out and begun aiming full touchscreen feature phones at the budget and emerging
 markets.
Although Nokia is struggling to gain a decent market share in the smartphone industry, it's still number one when it comes to feature phones, and this new range looks to close the gap between the two sectors.
Nokia said: "These latest phones have been designed to provide an incredibly rich, smartphone-like experience to consumers who want to be set free from excessive data consumption costs and short battery life."
MeeGo anyone?
The three handsets run Nokia's home-brewed Series 40 operating system, which takes design cues from the ill-fated MeeGo OS which made a brief cameo on handsets such as the Nokia N9.
We saw leaks of the Nokia Asha 311 back in May – sporting that MeeGo-esque user interface and we now know that it will have a single-core 1GHz processor, 3-inch (320 x 240) screen, 3.5G network connectivity, microSD card slot and a 3.2MP camera with QVGA video recording.
The Asha 305 and Asha 306 are identical, apart from the 305 offering dual-SIM capabilities. They pack a 3-inch (400 x 240) display, 2G network connectivity, microSD card slot and a 2MP camera with QVGA video recording.
Cheap and cheerful
Ok, so specification-wise the trio are underwhelming, but these feature phones do have two big plus points: battery life and price.
Nokia reckons the 1,110mAh battery in the Asha 311 will offer up a whopping 781 hours of 3G standby time and 4.5 hours of 3G talk time, while the 305 and 306 handsets offer 528 and 600 hours of standby respectively.
Then comes the cost – Nokia has slapped the low, low price of €63 (around £50) on the Asha 305, which is expected to ship sometime in the second quarter of this year, while the Asha 306 and Asha 311 will roll out in the third quarter, flaunting tags of €68 (around £55) and €92 (around £75).
Nokia was unable to confirm if any of these handsets would make it to UK shores, but if they do, they could be the perfect devices for first-time users, or as backup handsets.

Nokia pulls Skype for Lumia 610

Ben Kersey, May 23rd 2012

Microsoft’s latest update to Windows Phone, Tango, allowed phones running lower hardware specifications to run on the platform. The Nokia Lumia 610 is one such phone, but is the strategy backfiring already? Nokia has told users has told users that the Skype experience on the Lumia 610 isn’t up to par, and in the future the app won’t be available for download from the Windows Marketplace for that particular model.

Here’s the full statement from Nokia:

Nokia values the user experience provided by its products and services. Therefore, although the Skype Windows Phone version is workable on Nokia Lumia 610, after in-depth testing, we found that the user experience is not up to par with Nokia and Skype’s expectation and decided not recommending users using Skype on Nokia Lumia 610. In the future, users of Nokia Lumia 610 would no longer be able to download Skype Windows Phone version from Window Phone Marketplace. However, Skype Windows Phone version would still be available for other users.
The issue essentially boils down to the lack of RAM on the Lumia 610. The standard for Windows Phones is 512MB of RAM, while the Lumia 610 is only running 256MB. The app was most likely designed with the higher limit in mind, so Lumia 610 users seem to be butting up against memory limits. Skype did suggest that the app might not run properly on phones with less than 512MB, and it turns out the company was right.
It’s not clear right now if Skype intends to release an updated version of the app that will cater to lower specification phones, but we can’t imagine Microsoft will sit still and let the issue stand as is. Users probably aren’t happy about a premiere app being pulled either, and it raises questions about what other apps might share a similar fate in the future.
