Motorola Photon Q Hands-on and Unboxing

By Chris Burns

Motorola is bringing on a brand new slider to the market with a QWERTY keyboard and the ability to connect to 4G LTE in the Motorola PHOTON Q. We’ve got our hands on this device today and are finding its lovely 5-row keyboard to be just as nice as past DROID products we’ve seen from the manufacturer, brought on here with the speed of a dual-core processor and some nice rounded corners to keep you comfortable. The bright and sharp 4.3-inch 960 x 640 pixel resolution qHD display as well brings on a powerhouse for the manufacturer’s line of like-minded smartphones.

You’ll find that this device falls right in line with the whole Motorola family that’s been released over the past few weeks and months. This means that if you’ve got a XYBOARD or a RAZR in one hand and this in the other, you’ll know good and well that they’re part of the same Motorola design generation. The slider is strong, the keyboard is lit all around each of the keys, and the whole package brings on the best Motorola device in this form factor that the manufacturer has ever produced.

The dual-core processor inside comes from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon S4 – an impressive beast in and of itself. You’ve also got a large LED notification light above the speaker grill that lights up whenever you’ve got something new coming in via email, Twitter, or whatever else you’ve got popping in on the mobile web. The back of the device is curved so as to allow easier gripping – new and a bit unique for the OEM.

There’s 1GB of RAM here, 8GB of internal storage, and a microSD card slot to expand your memory by 32GB. You’ve also got a VGA camera on the front, an 8 megapixel camera on the back, and a beast of a device all-in-all ready for your summer and fall season of mobile computing. Stay tuned as we give this device a once-over here on SlashGear with a full review coming up next week!

Asus PadFone, it's tablet it's phone

By Jon Phillips

OK, Asus, you’ve convinced us: You’re a world leader in clever mobile docking strategies.
At Mobile World Congress Monday, Asus announced the PadFone, a 4.3-inch smartphone that can be directly inserted inside a 10.1-inch docking tablet, aptly named the PadFone Station. Think of the system as two devices that share a single brain. It’s a smartphone, sure, but it’s also a full-fledged tablet that’s powered by smartphone processing.

But, wait, it gets more clever still. If you insert your PadFone Station into an optional keyboard dock, your system becomes something akin to a traditional notebook. It appears to be the ultimate, docked-together daisy chain: the phone that becomes a tablet that becomes a serious computing device.
This is so, so Asus. Just look at the Transformer Prime for a glimpse into the company’s obsession with docking strategies.
When operating as a handset, the PadFone offers decidedly high-end features. You’ll get Android 4.0 (aka Ice Cream Sandwich); a 4.3-inch, 960×540 Super AMOLED display swaddled in Gorilla Glass; a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor backed by 1GB of RAM; and an 8MP rear camera. Neither LTE nor specific carrier support was announced, but if Asus sticks to tradition, this will be an unlocked device, and you’ll be expected to sort out service on your own.
As for the PadFone Station, it boasts a 10.1-inch, 1280×800, capacitive multi-touch display covered in Gorilla Glass,. It also increases the PadFone’s battery capacity by 500 percent, says Asus. The PadFone’s 8MP camera continues to work when docked, and the Station also includes speakers befitting a true tablet. According to an Asus press release, the system boasts “Dynamic Display technology which allows seamless transition between the PadFone and PadFone Station display screens.”

Oh, and in case you were wondering what happens when you get a phone call on your docked PadFone, there’s an optional PadFone Stylus Headset. You can use it as a “traditional” tablet stylus, but also transforms into a Bluetooth headset.
We just wish this cleverly integrated system boasted a faster processor, like the quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 that ships in the Transformer Prime. In an integrated system with notebook aspirations, we’d like as much processing performance as possible.

Nokia pulls Skype for Lumia 610

Ben Kersey, May 23rd 2012

Microsoft’s latest update to Windows Phone, Tango, allowed phones running lower hardware specifications to run on the platform. The Nokia Lumia 610 is one such phone, but is the strategy backfiring already? Nokia has told users has told users that the Skype experience on the Lumia 610 isn’t up to par, and in the future the app won’t be available for download from the Windows Marketplace for that particular model.

Here’s the full statement from Nokia:

Nokia values the user experience provided by its products and services. Therefore, although the Skype Windows Phone version is workable on Nokia Lumia 610, after in-depth testing, we found that the user experience is not up to par with Nokia and Skype’s expectation and decided not recommending users using Skype on Nokia Lumia 610. In the future, users of Nokia Lumia 610 would no longer be able to download Skype Windows Phone version from Window Phone Marketplace. However, Skype Windows Phone version would still be available for other users.
The issue essentially boils down to the lack of RAM on the Lumia 610. The standard for Windows Phones is 512MB of RAM, while the Lumia 610 is only running 256MB. The app was most likely designed with the higher limit in mind, so Lumia 610 users seem to be butting up against memory limits. Skype did suggest that the app might not run properly on phones with less than 512MB, and it turns out the company was right.
It’s not clear right now if Skype intends to release an updated version of the app that will cater to lower specification phones, but we can’t imagine Microsoft will sit still and let the issue stand as is. Users probably aren’t happy about a premiere app being pulled either, and it raises questions about what other apps might share a similar fate in the future.

Samsung Announces Entry Level Galaxy Mini 2

Ahead of the media preview of its bigger brother next week, Samsung have just released the Galaxy mini 2, an entry level Android smartphone that at RM599 looks like its quite good value for money. At 800MHz, 512MB of RAM, 3.27Inch HVGA TFT display which does 480x320, 3MP camera and 1,300mAh battery that has NFC capability, the only real letdown is that the phone will still run Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

The Galaxy mini 2 may just be head to head with the recently announced HTC Desire C and may fall behind on the OS front, camera and of course the 25GB dropbox space. However it's all about the price. If the price is drastically different, those specs won't matter, however if the price isn't all that different, I don't see why the mini 2 would be a better choice than the Desire C.

As it stands, for RM599 the mini 2 is quite a decent starter smartphone.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has just been released, and its spec list reads like a dream for tech enthusiasts. In this article I will look at how the handset differs to its predecessor the Galaxy S2 in terms of some key features.
Screen
The Samsung Galaxy S2 is well known for the quality of its touchscreen, and this is continues with the Galaxy S3. The new version has a larger screen at 4.8 inches which is half an inch bigger than that of the previous instalment of the Galaxy smartphone series. The same basic screen technology is continued in the new flagship, sporting a Super-AMOLED capacitive panel, which is renowned as one of the best features of the Galaxy S2. In the new version though, the screen resolution has been upped to a 720p count, which means the Galaxy S3 is capable of displaying high definition content like movies and games.
Camera
The Samsung Galaxy S3 was widely rumoured to include a 12 megapixel camera leading up to its release. During the live unveiling at Earl's Court in London though, we learned that it actually has an 8 megapixel unit, as does the Samsung Galaxy S3. Although the camera's pixel count is not as high as many were anticipating, it is far from disappointing. A wealth of new features has been added to the camera function, making it easier to use than ever. For example, you can capture up to 20 photos with a single touch of the capture icon, so you can choose the best one to keep. Of course, all the usual image enhancing features are included such as image stabilisation, face detection and an LED flash. Video capture is in 1080p high definition which looks great on the HD screen, and can be streamed to a number of compatible devices.
Processor and Operating System
The Samsung Galaxy S2 was the first smartphone from the manufacturer to sport a dual-core processor with a clockspeed of 1.2 GHz. The S3 though has a 1.4 GHz Exynos processor so it directly competes with flagship phones from the likes of HTC (One X) and LG (Optimus 4X HD), both of which recently unveiled their new flagship Android devices at MWC 2012 in Barcelona. The new Android 'Ice Cream Sandwich' is the latest version, and is the OS of choice for the Samsung Galaxy S3 which also runs Samsung's custom Android UI called TouchWiz. This has plenty of improvements over the previous version found on the S2, many of which are aimed at making it the most intuitive interface out there which responds to a variety of natural movements and actions.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 offers plenty of improvements over its predecessor, but the Galaxy S2 is still as popular as ever, remaining one of the best selling Android devices of all time. The S2 will be released in the UK on May 29th, with a number of major networks already advertising pre-order offers on their websites.
